Team WiseMove Wins 2008 DerbyCross(c) Competition

Seaview’s Jockeys Take Close Second in Hotly Contested Battle for the DerbyCross Cup

Middleburg, Virginia –This year’s DerbyCrossÓ held at 3:00pm on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Morven Park International Equestrian Center in Leesburg, VA (www.morvenpark.org), was the closest competition in the history of the event.  In the end, it was Team WiseMove, captained by Jan Byyny, who finally claimed the DerbyCross Cup and the $6,500 grand prize.  Byyny was aboard My Security Blanket, aka “Linus”, an eight-year-old American Thoroughbred gelding currently competing at the Advanced level with his owner, Alexandra Tatham.  Team WiseMove was made up of DerbyCross veterans, Will Coleman, who rode In Mid Air, aka “Junior”, a nine-year-old New Zealand Thoroughbred, and Lynn Symansky, who brought her Rolex partner, 16-year-old American Thoroughbred gelding, No It Tissant, aka “Fergus”.  The team’s jumper rider, Canadian Gavin Moylan, was a first timer at the competition and had a great go on Con-Air, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Springstone LLC.  Moylan tore up the course and took home the Show Jumping MVP award, given to the horse and rider with the fastest time.

Taking second place this year and a $1,500 check, was Team Seaview’s Jockeys, captained by Doug Payne who rode Advanced level veteran, Happy Valley (formerly campaigned by top U.S. competitor and past DerbyCross rider, Bonnie Mosser). Payne also took home the MVP award for the event riders.  Other members of Team Seaviews’s Jockeys were Bobby Meyerhoff, riding Legga Holly, a six-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare; Australian rider Simone Kann, riding Balmoral Tim Tram, a nine-year-old Australian Thoroughbred who, in addition to being a proven two-star horse is also a World Cup show jumper, and Argentine show jump rider, Silvio Mazzoni, riding Utah B, a seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood. Mazzoni has competed in over 20 Grand Prix events and has won at the CCI*** level in South America.

Once again, the top riders in horse sports turned out to try for the top prize and take home the DerbyCross Cup.  Jan Byyny, Lynn Symansky, Will Coleman were joined by Allison Springer, Sharon White and Kristen Bachman (riding for Team Orange Crush). They are among the stars from the world of eventing and are all DerbyCross veterans.  All have competed at the Advanced four-star level of the sport and brought their talent and A-Game to this year’s event. DerbyCross team show jumpers were equally impressive with both their riding and their resumes. In addition to Moylan and Mazzoni, Pato Muente, from Argentina, who rode for Team Orange Crush (Sharon White, Kristen Bachman, captained by Allison Springer), is a veteran of many Nations Cups, World Cup Qualifiers and the Grand Prix circuit in Holland and Germany.

This year, DerbyCross also had a team made up of rising young stars in eventing and show jumping, Team Pink Panthers, captained by Nate Chambers, who is one of the top 10 Young Riders in the country.  He’s won gold and silver medals in the NAYRC competitions in 2005 and 2007. Fellow team members, Ashley Kehoe is a top competitor at the CCI Two-Star level, and Jennifer Brannigan, won double gold medals at the 2008 NAYRC and has been named to the US Developing Rider list. Brannigan wowed the crowd with one of the few clear rounds of the day.  The Pink Panthers’ show jumper, Elizabeth Eaton, balances her time as a full-time student at Stevenson University with her competition schedule, where she is consistent competitor on the Circuit from Wellington, FL to Lake Placid, NY.

Members of the winning team took home cash, trophies and prizes, including Ariate helmet bags from The Tack Box in Middlburg, VA (www.thetackboxinc.com )and visors and gift certificates from Mountain Khakis (www.mountainkhakis.com ).  Blue Yonder Farm (www.blueyonderfarm.com ) supplied tote bags and baseball hats to all the team captains.

Returning this year as MVP Sponsor is The Fork Stables in Norwood, NC (www.forkstables.com).  Silver Sponsors were Tri-County Feeds, Etc. (www.tricountyfeeds.com), Broadstone Equine Insurance (www.broadstoneequine.com) and Piedmont Equine (www.piedmontequinepractice.com ). The Official Truck Sponsor for DerbyCross 2008 was Pohanka Dodge, in Leesburg, VA www.pohankachryslerdodge.com ).
